JTI
Brand specialists for Japan Tobacco International, on an international innovation programme.
Context
JTI operates in dozens of markets, with teams whose commercial realities, regulations and reflexes have almost nothing in common from one country to the next. When a group of that size sets out to create new brands, the difficulty is never the idea.
The difficulty is getting teams spread across several continents to agree on the same one. That is what DARE was brought in for, as brand specialists on an innovation programme run out of Barcelona, Riga and London.
Case study
In a global organisation, a brand is not a creative problem. It is an alignment problem.
Every brand is judged on three levels, and we cross-reference them systematically: what it shows, what it actually is internally, and what its market values. The gap between those three readings is the diagnosis. We document it through an audit of existing materials, immersion sessions with leadership and then with the teams, and a benchmark that compares postures rather than aesthetics. The output is not a report but a reference framework: positioning, audiences, promise, tone.
At JTI, the immersion work was run across three cities with teams drawn from markets worldwide. A non-disclosure agreement covers the substance of the programme.
Creating a brand from a blank page is a matter of method, not inspiration. We work in workshops, with everyone who will have to carry the brand in the room, and we make the decisions there rather than taking them away. Each direction is built from the strategic ground up, put in front of the market, and either held or dropped on evidence. What we deliver is a defensible brand, not a preference.
At JTI, several brands were designed, tested and taken to launch on international markets.
Written values change nothing as long as they remain a document. We bring them to life through activations: moments, formats and content designed to make each value tangible, first for the teams, then for the market. The test is simple, every activation has to trace back to a specific value. Otherwise it is communication, not brand.
At JTI, DARE designed and ran the full programme of a gathering for the hundred people of the Global Reduced Risk Products team, from a blank page: format, branding, sequencing and participant experience.
